Senior leaders are made in field

On leadership as a field practice.

The principle

Authority is not granted by title. It is built by showing up. The senior leader who has not been in the field, in the crisis, in the boardroom is not yet a senior leader.

What this means in practice

In practice, the work is the title. The title without the work is just a name on a door. The leader who has shipped the work earns the room — and earns the right to fill it well.
